Sasha pushed her horse on through the sagebrush, following the flash of Thunder's tail ahead. The horse was faster than hers, but she held on as well as she could to his trail. Sasha knew she'd made a catastrophic mistake the moment she crossed onto Ballydorn land without calling ahead. But Thunder, Sullivan Ranch's prize breeding stallion, had somehow gotten loose and their tracking system showed him here. Her Ukrainian grandmother would have called it "acting with more heat than head."
She tried calling once, twice and then three times. It looked like she had one bar, but there was nothing but air on the phone. Mountains canceled the tower's reach all the time. Just her luck. She moved off in several directions, phone out, Thunder's tail slashing the air. She couldn't get any reception and this might be her only chance to get the stallion back without having to call in anyone else. The Ballydorn Ranch stretched before her, its carefully maintained fences and manicured paths a stark contrast to Sullivan's more natural approach. Even the air felt different here - all crisp efficiency without the wild sage sweetness of home.
