Amy signed herself up for one class in Northeastern’s accounting certificate program in the summer semester. She was less than sanguine about going back to school, but the courses were all online, and the career opportunities too juicy to pass up. She did not want to spend the rest of her life in human resources processing layoffs and not making enough to afford to own a home in Boston. Though, to be fair, few people could afford a home in Boston more luxurious than a damp cardboard box behind the CVS.

Xavi promised Amy all the help that she might need with the coursework. That was all well and good, but Amy had other things she’d rather be doing with Xavi. They still got two nights a week together and a Saturday every other week. They kept in touch chatting about books they were reading.
