Nadine saw the thing coming out of the sky. “What the hell is that?” she wondered. It looked big, far too big to be a vulture or even an eagle. As it got closer, she saw that it looked like a winged person. Was it somebody testing some kind of new glider?
She looked around the beach, but it was deserted. She hadn’t seen any boats out on the lake either, and there weren’t any cliffs in the area tall enough to launch a glider from. Did the guy fly out of an airplane or something?
The thing swiftly swooped down toward her. Soon it was close enough for her to recognize that it wasn’t a man in a glider--it wasn’t even human. This was something alien, something monstrous. Her mind kept rejecting its existence, telling her that it couldn’t possibly be real, but the thing kept right on existing anyway.
It was headed straight toward her.
Nadine got to her feet, and she ran. She didn’t stop to put on her sandals, she just full-out booked it across the sand back to her car. She didn’t know what the thing was, but she didn’t want to find out. Her feet pounded the ground, and her hat blew off her head as she ran. She didn’t look back; the hat was the last of her worries.
