Georgette’s mouth went dry. Surely, by now, someone must be looking for her. She was supposed to have finished lighting the fires in the manor house and then before to the kitchens to help clean while the Earl finished his business before luncheon.
Instead, the man she had been dreaming of had found her in the library and treated her to the most exquisite pleasure she had ever felt.
She knew that maids were supposed to be not seen, nor heard in large manor houses. She had always been taught it was completely inappropriate to want anything to do with the family. They were upstairs, and she was decidedly downstairs. She was meant to keep the fires burning, the house tidy, and the linens fresh. If she had good behavior, she might be allowed to arrange fresh flowers in the rooms as the butler saw fit.
She had only met the Earl briefly when she was hired but couldn’t stop thinking about him since. He was tall, fit, and handsome, with dark hair that was a little gray at the temples and striking blue eyes.
Georgette had never seen a man so handsome as the Earl of Hamphordshire and tried to school her mind away from him as was proper. Still, she had dreams of him coming to her at night and confessing his love so she could live as the lady of the house.
